Demystifying Strategic
and Operating Excellence
Business Planning
Even if you've planned before, annual business planning remains crucial. A year can bring significant changes—shifting priorities, new products, and staff changes —that can make your long-range plan outdated. A business strategy requires a long-range plan with annual milestones. This structure clarifies your goals, current position, and necessary actions, helping you stay on track.
Annual planning also measures your progress, especially for longer-term plans. Collaboration is key; involve your team, as valuable insights often come from those closest to the work. For small business owners pursuing the dream of independence and market impact, consistent strategic planning and execution are crucial for navigating the realities of ownership and turning those dreams into successful businesses.
Guidelines for Strategic Success
There are six proven, practical, and powerful modules that will help demystify strategic planning and execution.
- Clarity Catalyst—Your Accelerator (Turbo, Supercharger): How to demystify strategic and operating excellence to help you accelerate solutions and resolve problems with ease.
- Strategic Clarity—Your Compass: Clarify why you are in business, where you are currently on the mission, and what actions you need to take to fulfill that mission.
- Goals Clarity—Your Vital Few: Identify and document the goals, your Vital Few, that you need to achieve in your business categories, like Customers, Workforce, Operations, and Data & Information.
- Execution Clarity—Your Process: How to turn a plan into reality. There are proven amplifiers, boosters, and multipliers to demolish the obstacles that are standing in your way.
- Organization Clarity—Your Team: How to align your team’s roles, strengths, and goals for breakthrough growth and long-term viability.
- Leadership Clarity—Your Culture: How to develop your leaders and team, especially current and emerging leaders, to ensure a high-performance culture and long-term viability.

There is art and science in the process. The more you follow the GR8 Results System, the more you structure your thinking to see business as a creative process. You will notice areas or structures you can improve each year you follow the system.
Notice in this graphic how all modules are served by and depend on the Clarity Catalyst, and how they are held together by high-performing leaders who create a culture of execution excellence. Each module requires the other modules within it to maximize clarity; if something is left out or misused, it will create confusion and reduce productivity.

The Clarity Catalyst consists of three fundamental elements: TAP.
- THP (THERE, HERE, PATH)
- ALA (Act, Learn, Adjust)
- PERSIST
Most people refer to the Catalyst as THP, but the entire creative process is TAP, as described in detail in Module 1.
The more you use The Clarity Engine, the more you reorient your thinking to see business as a creative process revolving around THP, ALA, and Persistence. Additionally, you remove the obstacle of thinking that executing your plan is complex. Finally, you will naturally see areas or structures you can improve as you continue to learn and adjust as you follow the system.
The final module, Leadership Clarity, is highly beneficial for binding everything together and reinforcing all earlier modules. This helps you constantly link the Purpose and Core Values to daily actions. It is challenging because of the time required to help change the leaders' and the team's thinking.
Diligence in learning and applying the leadership and business insights in the Culture Clarity module will result in a self-governing, accountable culture of truth. However, it requires leaders who consistently revisit each goal’s THERE, explore the truth about HERE, and focus the team on learning from daily actions rather than blaming.
Leadership is the critical element! Consistently and repeatedly reminding themselves and the team about the Purpose, Core Values, and Vital Few goals.
So, let’s get started.
